    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.co.uk Review
Spider-Man: The Movie brings your friendly neighbourhood web-slinger to life with engrossing realism, proving that a superhero game of such complex nature can be achieved with nearly flawless and non-intrusive gameplay. Be it wandering the city's environs in search of villains, or just checking out your surroundings by web-swinging high above them, you truly can do whatever Spider-Man can. It's all here: high-flying aerial battles, the ability to web up and yank your enemies close for pummelling, and the capacity for crawling or web-zipping up, down and over any surface--and that's just for starters. All in all, this is one involved game that doesn't fail to live up to the hype.

The game parallels the motion picture's storyline, steering you through a progression of challenges that begin with the hunt for Uncle Ben's murderer, and ends with a final showdown with the Green Goblin. You begin as Peter Parker dressed in his wrestling costume and must defeat a variety of thugs throughout each level before advancing to the next set of challenges. The game gets progressively tougher as you encounter in turn Shocker, the Vulture, Scorpion and, of course, the Green Goblin.

Visually, Spider-Man is a treat: cityscapes unfold in realistic detail and are enhanced by sunlight shining between buildings; cut scenes offer seamless animation; interiors are painstakingly recreated; and Spider-Man and his enemies are well rendered, moving about the screen in clean fashion. As an added bonus, most characters are voiced by their movie counterparts, and the training mode features the sarcastic wit of Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell. --Larry White

    Pros:

    • detailed controls bring Spider-Man to life
    • challenging gameplay enhanced by numerous fight styles
    • stunning visuals at every level
    Cons:
    • camera angles slow to respond at times
    • some interiors too dark
    • repetitive one-liners

4 out of 5 stars not bad but room for improvement.   October 13, 2007

this game overall is very good, but it is way too hard! I actually had to type in a cheat to unlock all the levels, and when you have to do that to get through a game then it is way too hard! the graphics aren't brilliant either, the peoples faces look a bit squashed into themselves. the first 5 levels are easy but after that it just gets really difficult! this is the game's overall score:

    graphics: 3/5

    gameplay 4/5

    difficullty level:4/5

    overall 3/5

sorry if you think I go on a bit too much, but I hope you found my review helpful.

    3 out of 5 stars I'm not impressed.   July 15, 2007

I loved Spider-man 2 but this one was just boring and hard. The graphics were good but the game was quite unrealistic and the the criminals are really hard to beat up. Spider-man swings atomically and he can swing when there aren't any buildings around! It's also quite hard to control how he swings. He kept going higher and higher! I must admit taking pictures of Spider-man was quite fun but it just wasn't enough. I'm so sorry Spidey. Spider-man 2 was a lot better. The graphics were better and you can only swing when there are building around. Overall I give Spider-man 3 stars. I'm not impressed :(

4 out of 5 stars Spins a web, but doesn't always wing high   April 27, 2007

I remember buying this game after eagerly awaiting two or so years near enough. I remember that this basically was the reason at first why I wanted a PS2. Anyway I got this after reading a review which gave it a fairly good write up.

All the screenshots of gameplay showed incredible graphics even for a PS2. So good and detailed they are that you can see the tiniest of linings on the characters costumes. The controls are great and feel really fluid, especially when you seem to be outnumbered by enemies and use either the scissor kick or Handspring attacks. The web swinging, apart from the webbing sticking to clouds seemingly, is so realistic and you don't looking like you're swinging along poles anymore.

However, sadly the game is rigidly lineiar, unlike some previews I remember stating it would be free-roaming. I, along with millions of other fans had to wait a further two years for that (see my review for Spiderman 2 PS2 game). For example, although the levels created look great, when you're outside you can only go around a certain part of the city and can't go down to street level. Basically it's only a matter of 'getting from A to B and perhaps do C on route'. It's very repitiive but worth replaying because of loads of great unlockables such as Pinhead Bowling sub game that supports up to four players and also the chance to play as Harry Osbourn in the Green Goblin suit and glider.
Another problem is, although the bosses are obvuiously more formidable and intelligent, the AI is otherwise incredibly poor for example, towards the end of the game there are some stealth missions and if a guard sees you he calls for these like super-robots and all you have to do to lose them is stay in the shadows.

Having said that though, if you can ignore these problems then if you're a fan, you'll no doubt enjoy it. Just don't expect it to be as great as Spiderman 2 PS2 Game. ****

4 out of 5 stars Very playable   September 5, 2006

I have not seen Spiderman: The Movie, but still found this very entertaining. In an attempt to recreate the feel of the movie, the characters' appearances are based on those of the stars, with Peter Parker/Spiderman and the Green Goblin voiced by the movie actors. The graphics are very good and there are many pre-level cutscenes which recreate scenes in the movie.

When you first start playing, you can go to the training levels, which take you through the standard actions you have to perform. The main game starts off with Peter Parker travelling across the city skyscrapers to find and interrogate men about the murder of his uncle. The rest of the levels are not all just about swinging around and beating up thugs. One level consists of sneaking around in shadows to avoid security robots and others have you rescuing civillians from danger. There are also challenging boss battles. Some of these are on the ground but more difficult ones take place in mid-air.

The analogue sticks are used to move Spiderman and rotate the camera, with the buttons for actions. Spidey can jump, kick, punch and use various combos of each to defeat his enemies, but what does everyone love the most? Web-slinging! This has several uses apart from swinging across the screen. You can also fire at targets in the air, hang from the ceiling and tie up your enemies! In each level there are pick-ups which increase your health, web or a give you a new fighting move.

With its simple controls and varied levels, the game is great fun to play, whether you are a Spiderman fan or not!

5 out of 5 stars Spiderman: Go beyond the movie...   May 27, 2005

Bitten by a genetically altered spider, high school student Peter Parker is suddenly empowered with supernatural abilities, including Spider-Sense, web-slinging and wall crawling. Assume the role of Peter as he adapts to his new powers and becomes Spider-Man. But beware-the city's villans won't be pleased to see a new hero on the scene.
.Defend the city from the clutches of evil with all-new combat moves and dizzying airborne acrobatics.
.Move through stunning scenes from the movie as you explore enourmous city enviroments with newfound manoeurability.
.Battle the worlds toughest super villans, including Shocker, Vulture, and the Green Goblin.
