Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic takes place just a few years after the Mandolorian Wars, thousands of years before the events in the Star Wars movies we know and love. Two Jedi, master Revan and his apprentice Malak, led the Republic's forces to victory and pursued the Mandalorians into deep space only to return as Dark Jedi at the head of a huge fleet of Sith warships. Its your task to find out why. The storyline could have been a standard coming-of-age yarn, but is instead a genuinely interesting adventure which gradually unravels your connection with these events. The game's planet-hopping adventures are driven by your exploration of these connections and how they relate to your larger goal of discovering the source of the Sith's sudden fleet. During your adventure you can explore side quests minor (such as racing swoops or gambling) and major (such as uncovering the fascinating back stories of your companions). Star Wars fans will get a kick out of the rich lore introduced in the game, particularly the Tatooine storyline that reveals the origin and history of the Sand People. Gameplay is an abbreviated form of Wizards of the Coast's d20 Star Wars RPG game system. The player creates a character as a member of one of three starting classes (soldier, smuggler, scout) and then later chooses a Jedi class (guardian, consular, sentinel). Joining the player's character are other Jedi, warriors, thieves, droids, a wookiee, and even a Mandolorian. Combat is real-time turn-based, meaning the turns are seamless but the player has the option of pausing the action at any time to issue orders or direct any character to use a certain Force power, ability, feat, or item. Graphics range from adequate to exceptional. Lightsaber graphics and environmental effects (like waving grass, clouds, and weather) bring the world to life. Complete with sounds straight out of the movies, the thrilling combat is pure Star Wars. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a masterpiece of Star Wars gaming. The pacing, balance of action and dialogue, clever puzzles and quests, and loving attention to detail have set the bar very high for role-playing games in general and Star Wars games in particular. --Mike Fehlauer

This game is Star wars esentially, an absoutle gem of a game it is too, you can completely customize your character to the way you like (is limited to certain avatar appearances) and throughout the game you will be able to do what all jedi do, to use the lightsabre and the force to your means. Also if you play as a man you can try charm Bastula and if your a woman you can try charm Carth Onasi.
In one word i would describe this game: WOW.
A must buy if you are a true star wars fan.

I got this agme last month after having blown all my wages on a skiing holiday. It kept me indoors for a period of time long enough to pass the days before pay day. The graphics are amazing, the turn based combat is actually more fun than I expected and the characters are quite indepth. I personally like to wind Carth up a great deal, but in a way that doesn't gain darkside points. The story is quite convincing and the twist futher on in the game is top notch. The alien worlds are nice just explore and the musical changes when you start a fight is so well done.
I would say this game is great although I am about 4 years behind and need to stay indoors this month as I will blow my wages again.

Years ago I heard of this game - sadly a lack of money and a poor PC meant I could not try this before now.
This well deserves the game of the year title. The story is fantastic as is the skills, attributes and charater interplay. The games is completely playable and there is plenty of scope to branch out in the side plots: with jobs for hunters, elite assassins, racers and gamblers.
Despite the game's age it is still very very playable.
A classic.

Having never been a big Star Wars fan I was somewhat skeptical about giving this game a go, but as I had enjoyed a number of other RPGs and this had rave reviews, I eventually thought I would give it a try. And I was not disappointed. This is a great game with a story which puts the Star Wars films themselves to shame. It is true that despite it being set thousands of years before the events of the films, the technology etc looks remarkably similar, but, as far as I am concerned, so what - this is still a highly enjoyable game to play. I was so impressed I even went out and bought the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD (though I still remain less than impressed with them).
Some of the reviews here seem to be about the sequel rather than the original game. One of the reviewers, for example, goes on about the influence system between characters - yet this is purely something that existed in KOTOR 2 not the original game. KOTOR 2 suffered becuase Lucas Arts wanted to rush it out to stores, so the conclusion of the game seems abrupt and not particularly well integrated. The original does not suffer from this flaw, and is a more rounded game experience.

Reading some of the other reviews, this much is obvious and please heed my advice. Play this game BEFORE you play the sequel, otherwise you'll end up comparing the two unfairly. Why you would I have no idea but some people have. I'll be neutral about the sequel for your benefit ;)
KOTOR 1 has it all. The main storyline is absolutely amazing. With reference to the review title, it's the only game that has a storyline that Lucasarts hasn't nicked from the films. You could play this, and completely understand what's happening without having seen the films, which I feel is a very strong reason for getting this game (I should say at this point, I think a team from another company, bioware maybe, made this with the permission of Lucasarts, so really Lucasarts has done nothing right).
You're accompanied by a possible 9 characters in total. Although, what the developers will neglect to inform you straight away is that you can only have 2 of them with you at any one time. But regardless, it's not a bad point. You can change what characters you have with you in the majority of areas in the game. You will, however, probably end up neglecting a few of the characters and leaving them on board your ship. Mainly because they have so much less to say than other characters. But other reasons would be they're weak, or any skills they specialize in your character can do just as well at.
Talking to characters in your group can get them to reveal more about their background and their experiences, which really establishes their characters and determines whether you will like them or not. There's drama between the characters and it really does create an atmosphere at times. More often than not, talking to them in this way opens a side story that is somehow related with a person from their past. There's even romance plots between the player and 3 of the characters.
The story line and the characters are reason enough to buy this. Everything else is as it should be in an RPG, get experience, level up, choose skills, features and powers etc. It doesn't take a super computer to run in this day and age, and the pricing is very reasonable. Even if you're not a Star Wars fan you can still love this game (I'm a longtime Star Wars fan, for the record). Best Star Wars game out there. I completely recommend buying it. If you do go for it, make the most of it and enjoy it :)
