    Amazon.co.uk Review
    In a nutshell:
Lara Croft is finally back in the first game to do her legacy justice since the days of the original PlayStation. With updated graphics and gameplay, and a whole new suite of moves and equipment this is the sequel fans have always demanded.

    The lowdown:
After the disappointment of Angel of Darkness, the Tomb Raider series has gone back to basics with a new developer and even a new Lara. Combat is back to being only around a third of the game with everything else centred on platform jumping and puzzle solving. To help this, there's a canny new movement system that allows Lara to jump onto and grab objects at an angle, so there's none of the awkward grid based movement of the earlier games. This is also the first Tomb Raider to have a proper physics engine, with lots of the puzzles revolving around movement and the use of Lara's natty new magnetic grappling hook. The graphics are also excellent, and with input from the original creator this is a long awaited return to form.

    Most exciting moment:
The realisation that this is actually a proper update of the original game, as Lara leaps around cliffs like a mountain goat, with graphics and controls that aren't still stuck in 1996.

    Since you ask:
The new voice of Lara is provided by Keeley Hawes, who also plays Zoe Reynolds in BBC TV show Spooks.

    The bottom line:
Lara Croft is back in the first decent new Tomb Raider game for a long time.

4 out of 5 stars It "feels" better than TR:A   February 15, 2008
    F. Dirkes (Berlin)
First off an admission: I'm not an old TR fan. I only started gaming after the PS2 came out. It took me a while to warm up to the idea of playing Lara, and my first experience, AoD, was disappointing, and I never finished the game. Still, I heard good things about Legend, and thought I'd give it a try. It was smoother and the controls were easier to manage, but I was distracted by other things and let it lie around for a while. When Anniversary appeared and everyone raved about it, I gave that a go. Anniversary was, needless to say, very challenging (at least for me), but when I finished it I went back to Legend to take advantage of my momentum. So Anniversary is the only game I can compare Legend to.

For all of Anniversary's accomplishments, I have to admit that I actually felt more satisfaction after completing Legend. True, it wasn't as difficult a game, but the contemporary story gave me more of a feeling of being a character in a full-length movie, which is something I appreciate. I want to identify with my character. I also liked Uncharted and Heavenly Sword for much the same reason. The boss fights and overall gameplay in Legend were more fun than in Anniversary, and I didn't scream in agony time and time again after falling into a river of lava.

Still far from perfect, I think TR: Legend deserves more credit than some purists are probably willing to grant it, and am looking forward to TR: Underworld to continue Lara's adventure more due to Legend, than Anniversary.

I recomend this game to anyone (over the age limit). The Graphics are amazingly clear, i have to say (unlike the others) it took me a long time to complete, which is good.
The voice of lara croft is perfect, its sound more mature and suits the character. The levels are fun and interesting and the plot too is very good. Buy it for Christmas !!!
This is everything you could want in a game.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD RETURN FOR THE SERIES   September 8, 2007

Yes, the control is different. That's a GOOD thing. The control in the earlier games was TERRIBLE. I can't believe someone would actually want to go back to controlling Lara like a truck. Yes, you would need a gamepad for the PC version also (just get a 360 pad and plug it in)-but again, this is a GOOD thing. Most ANY game with this type of viewpoint and control will function better with a control pad-so use one! And how many games of ANY type use the keyboard exclusively now? I played the original Tomb Raider DESPITE the control, not BECAUSE of the control... The original Tomb Raider had a great atmosphere and theme, and an interesting character. But it also had a lot of flaws. The control was terrible and unforgiving. The puzzles were frequently arbitrary and too difficult. It was easy to overlook the problems in that first game though, because for one thing it was one of the very first 3D adventure games, and was doing so much new. The problem came when Toby Gard (and I forget the other guy's name) were ousted from Core, and Core then proceeded to remake that same exact game over and over again. The sequels were basically level packs released year after year, without addressing any of the huge flaws the very first game had.

Well Legend gets a new developer (Crystal Dynamics), with a team headed up by Toby Gard-the guy who created the first game to begin with-and it FINALLY fixes everything that was wrong. The control has gone from being a chore, to actually being FUN on a "moment to moment basis". In other words, the act of just moving Lara around and interacting with the environments is fun now. The game has a solid physics engine, which many puzzles use to great effect. The puzzles seem more "organic" now-more "realistic" to the environments, rather than seeming arbitrary. As a result they're also much easier to figure out (which is a good thing, I think). Between that, the vastly better control, and the frequent restart points (at least on the X-Box 360 version), the game has almost completely eliminated the frustrating aspects of the original.

On top of that the dialog is excellent. Lara's banter with her team is quite frequently funny and well acted. (Lara's voiced perfectly by Keeley Hawes from Spooks.) And Lara comes off like she did in the first game (but better)-she has the same feel, and seems smart, competent, interesting...but with a bit of a crazy drive to her. She's once again a more compelling character than Indiana Jones (at least to me she is).

The plot even rises above the minimum. The title, "Legend" makes sense in more ways than one, and the plot is perfect for relaunching the series.

Lastly, both the graphics and music are very well done. As mentioned, I'm playing the Playstation 2 version (which I believe looks the same as the PC version if you turn on that version's "advanced" content on a high-end GPU). It has tons of gratuitous graphical effects. Most aren't strictly necessary, but add to the atmosphere. The soundtrack is similarly excellent. Almost verging on Celtic-ish at times, it always blends in with the environments well.

In short, this is a 100% successful relaunch of the series, and what Tomb Raider 2 SHOULD have been.

    5 out of 5 stars A Solid Review   August 10, 2007

I pre-ordered Tomb Raider: Legend and got it a day before it was released. After reading the reviews for this game i thought i better give my opinion. Firstly Tomb Raider is back and better than ever. This is by far either the best Tomb Raider game, or one of them. Lara looks amazing! And the gameplay is so much more fluid than the playstation games. You will be glued to your console as was i after receiving this game. The only thing that anyone has marked the game down for, is its length. On your first play through it will take you around 4-7 hours. Although dont let that put you off because there is also the croft manor to explore which will take you another 1-2 hours and there is a lot of replay value to the game. By replaying the levels and collecting the hidden actifacts you will unlock bonus content and it is extrememly worth it, if you are a tomb raider fan. Please dont let any review put you off buying this amazing game as it is a definate own for anyone who likes to have fun with their games. Also there will be a sequel to this game in 2008 and it would be beneficial if you had played part one of the story. TAKE MY ADVICE! YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!

    5 out of 5 stars Lara Croft - A Natural Evolution   August 5, 2007

A visual feast, a storyline worthy of a Hollywood movie, a soundtrack worthy of an Oscar. This is the natural evolution of the Lara Croft games, as computer graphics have become more and more photo realistic, so the characters, situations and locations have to become more believable. We are less gamers and more film directors, cinematographers, positioning our camera in the best place to create a visually stunning scene.

I love Tomb Raider Legend. This is Lara Croft brought bang up to date. I was drawn inexorably into the story. Some people have complained about the number of cut scenes in this game, but I enjoyed it all the more for them. I was completely immersed in the plot, and emotionally touched by the characters, and the inner struggles that Lara was contending with.

Once you get used to it, Legend is a dream to control. The major drawback is that you have a fixed 360 degree view all around Lara, at a fixed distance. This meant that there were many occasions when Lara just got in the way of your view. Also the camera had a nasty habit of jumping forwards to avoid obstacles, which broke the otherwise smooth flow of the graphics. These problems were partially mitigated by using the binoculars, although better camera control would have improved matters greatly.

I found the puzzles in Legend generally too easy to solve, and the locations too linear - there was only one path to follow, and items you were supposed to iteract with stood out too obviously from the background. The locations were also too small, and the game over too quickly. I needed more, much more!

The interactive cut scenes didn't work I thought, but the chase sequences on motorbikes were good fun and provided welcome breaks. Combat in Legend was a thrill, I felt in control, and that tactics mattered, and I felt rewarded. The gameplay was superb, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, and highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see a textbook example of how computer games and movies are converging.

For graphics, music, plot and pure entertainment value; I rate this higher than Tomb Raider Anniversary. However, Anniversary has bigger locations and better puzzles. Different games for different moods. I'm proud to have both in my collection. How long before the sequel to Legend ?! I can't wait!! If they took the best of Legend and the best of Anniversary to make the Legend sequel, now that would be a game worth waiting for.....
