An excellent RPG on PSP May 25, 2006 C. O'Connor (Birmingham, UK) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Welcome to Ys-originally released on PS2, but now converted to PSP. What's the difference? Not much, but you'll see as you read through the review. The game follows Adol, a man who fell overboard his ship, got sucked into the great vortex and ended up on the Canaan Islands. The islands are home to two tribes, the rhedans, and the eresians. Strange goings on are occuring and each tribe blames the other, but its up to Adol to discover the truth. In truth, this game has an excellent story line. Graphically, the game is nothing special, or at least it wasn't on PS2. The worlds are in full 3D from the woods of Quartera to the mountains of the eresian villages. The enemies, whilst vary from area to area, become repetitive, and the character design is quite flat, and due because the characters on screen are so small, its hard to make out what they actually look like. The gameplay allows you to fight in real time. You have the ability to use three weapons, lightning, fire and wind, and as you progress you'll be able to upgrade these weapons using collected emel. You'll also gain exp allowing you to level up Adol too. There are numerous items, and armour upgrades to unlock too. There are a number of bosses that break up gameplay. This said, the exceptional point of Ys is actually the music, each tune will stay in your mind. So whats the difference between this and PS2 version? Basically, the character don't speak, so you'll never hear their voices-ashame really, and the PSP version has cut and added its own scenes to the game, along with a couple of extra features which you can unlock. For those who loved the PS2 game, this is good, but its basically a repeat, but for anyone who loves RPG games, this is an excellent adition to your collection.
