Amazon.co.uk The Locust Horde is back and only you and your squad of elite soldiers stand between them and the death of every human being on the planet Sera. In Gears of War 2, entire cities are being destroyed in single attacks, and you must take the fight to the Locusts by battling them in their own underground lairs. You can play the whole of story mode with a friend | The Boomer enemies are back in many different varieties | The game’s ethos of “destroyed beauty” is still in full effect | Shoot the Ticker enemies before they explode in your face | The bestselling third-person shooter is back: bigger, better, and gorier than ever before. But you can't just blast your way through it--this game requires far more tactics and cunning than your usual mindless shooter. A refined cover system means you can use the enemy as “meat shields” as well as hide behind the fully destructible scenery. The graphics are looking better than ever, and the game is purposefully more bloody and violent than before. The story and characterisation has also been improved, making this an action game sequel with brains as well as brawn. Key Features - Brothers in arms: Have a friend join or leave your single player game whenever you want, and even battle together on different difficultly levels.
- Evolving enemies: You finally get a chance to take down the giant Brumak enemies, as well as even larger monsters and new creatures, such as the explosive Ticker.
- Practise makes perfect: Practice the multiplayer mode on your own with computer controlled “bots”--then use the new matchmaking system to find a real opponent of the same skill level.
- Chainsaw massacre: If you loved the chainsaw bayonet in the original game, you now can duel computer or human opponents with gaming’s messiest weapon attachment.
- Hordes of options: Try the new five-player Horde mode, where you all face off against an unending wave of enemies, or any of the seven other multiplayer modes.

EPIC December 1, 2008 Kennedy (London) I expected to be amazed, to be wowed, to be dazzled. But the campaign seemed tepid. The immediacy and intimacy of the first game was gone. And there was this infernal yapping. So much... story. The goofball designers made a poor judgment in thinking that ANY SINGLE ONE OF US buys this game because we care about the story. I, along with millions of others, bought this game so that I can slaughter monsters with a chainsaw and use satellites to rain thermonuclear death onto gigantic armoured spiders. Take my advice and, like in the movies, cut to the action: skip all the cut scenes at all times. Magically, the game instantly becomes fun, and endlessly replayable. In fact, it never lets up, because you never let it. It gets better, and better, and better. Just remember to press < every time they start yapping. Even the designers knew they were onto something. Marcus grunts "Enough already!" TIP: in the denizens campaign in the caverns, there'll be, as Marcus puts it, an opportunity "for a little sniper practice" on some distant unsuspecting locusts. Pull off five consecutive head shots to hear the best line of recorded dialogue in any video game in history.
Epic have done it again. November 30, 2008 Mr. Arj Chapman Gears of war 2 Gears 2 is the massive follow to the smash xbox 360 "game gears of war" The game was massively hyped by fans as the first game was such a fan favorite for both its addicting story mode and xbox live games. This time around their is new weapons, new characters and new online modes for you to sink your teeth into So briefly the story this time around is the locust are back and appear to be stronger then ever , as delta squad are sent in to take down the locust queen once and for all. This time around however Dom is searching for his lost wife , with cut scenes showing the emotion, more then the previous gears thats for sure. Graphics 10/10 Compared to the first game the graphics aren't hugely different , but to be honest the graphics where so good in the first game they don't exactly need to be improved, but they have indeed been tweaked for the better and it shows, you have to see the scenes and cut scenes to relay believe it as words cant describe it enough to give it justice. After playing through the whole game i didn't see any frame drops at all. Story 9/10 So its safe to say most shooters don't have the best stories as most will admit , but this time Epic Games really raised the bar , you can tel that their is much more thought gone into the story this time around , and some of the twists will leave you holding controller thinking wow did i just see thatand did that really happen. Game play 8/10 Its the most important part of any game obviously , and the unreal engine is still one of the best in my opinion, any bug that was in gears 1 do not exist in gears 2 , allot less cover issues are presant , but they can occur now and again sometimes leading to a death. The bug i noticed the most was the close combat ai, sometimes you can try and beat someone down and it wont actually work, this only does happen on occasion though but it can be annoying when it does happen. Other then that the ai and the feel of the weapons haven't changed and still feel the same as the first game. Live and co op 10/10 Online play is great and is just as good as the first. This time around a new game type has been added going by the name or "horde", basically you and your teammates are thrown into a map and you have to survive wave after wave of locust each time getting harder and more challenging enemies to go up against .oh yeah and if you die your eliminated until your team kill the rest of that wave of locust. Horde was by far my favorite online game and proves to be quite addicting and a true challenge of your skill. Also there is not as much lag as the first game , I have played about 15 online games and only one has minor lag in.
GOW 2 I am disgusted November 28, 2008 Paul Larg 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Campaign on this is great, just like the first gears, but what has happened to multiplayer? What a mess, you just cannot connect to matches. It was patched today and still its the same old story. In the words of a GOW veteran "I am disgusted"
Great potential, very weak multiplayer November 27, 2008 JevaYC (GG) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let's face it, the big appeal of the original Gears was the massive multiplayer carnage. Irrespective of the notable 'host advantage', I think it was (and remains) a success. After nailing the new campaign on the 'normal' level within 8 to 10 hours (it was too easy - and that's coming from someone who is rubbish at shooter games) I was looking forward to some new arenas and new features in the Gears 2 multiplayer environment. Whatever the thinking was behind the new party format, IT JUST DOESN'T WORK. After 3 weeks of owning Gears 2 I have played just 1 public match. And the only reason I got into that match was because some USA based guys I met in the original Gears had a party lobby already set up. For me, this is the letdown of 2008. The multiplayer potential is vast but being able to access it is a near impossibility unless you can easily gather a group of 5 friends in your lobby. Whether EPIC or Microsoft are able to offer a patch to improve the multiplayer environment is a big question. Fingers crossed that something can be done. Were it up to scratch then Gears 2 would be worthy of 4 stars or more. Since the multiplayer is such a mess and the campaign is so short, 2 is all I can give. Shame.
Dissapointment November 27, 2008 Leyton Stone (East London) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was disappointed by this game. I'm normally a fan of action games but found this one to be quite boring and repetitive.
