Product Description PLAYSTATION 3 already offers cutting-edge gaming and a High Definition Blu-ray Disc movie player, and soon you'll be able to watch, pause and record free-to-air digital television, thanks to PlayTV. It couldn't be easier to set up; simply plug a TV aerial into the back of the PlayTV Tuner, connect the PlayTV Tuner to your PS3 using a USB cable and then follow the on-screen instructions. And once you're up and running, you can record one channel while watching another or playing a PS3 game; see what's on now and next, with the easy to use Programme Guide; and watch TV when you're out and about, using Remote Play for PSP. In fact, you can enjoy all of PlayTV's great features on your PSP, whether you want to watch your recorded programmes or schedule new recordings. All you have to do is find a Wireless hotspot and activate the Remote Play feature. PlayTV is another reason to have PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP at the centre of your living room, and it's coming soon.

Play TV November 28, 2008 T. Hammond (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The unit arrived from Amazon quite quickly. Play TV set-up is very straight forward. SCEE even provide a DVD to guide you through installation (but in all honesty you don't need it). Once up and running you get a `Play TV' icon on your PS3 menu system. Once Play TV is selected you get another rotating menu system that allows you to control everything from selecting TV to choosing a channel (EPG) right through to managing recordings. I love SCEE menus and find them quite intuitive. The EPG is very good but not excellent like Sky. Once Play TV is running there are a number of informative icons that make navigation with the BD remote a breeze. SCEE even provide a TV cover for the BD remote (not that you really need it). In all honesty you only use a few buttons on a BD remote and mainly the big round one. My only gripe about the BD remote though is the size of the channel buttons (way too small). I have a 1080i TV with built in Freeview. I decided to buy the Play TV and plug in the aerial (thereby losing the Freeview on my TV and relying on the PS3 for Freeview). I have to say I am disappointed with the picture quality of the PS3 Freeview. The picture quality is a lot worse than the built in Freeview. I can't understand why. The only way to describe it is like comparing High Definition with Standard Definition. I feel short changed! The picture is really grainy and the wife has insisted we revert back to built in Freeview TV until I come up with a solution to make the picture better. I've tried everything available in PS3 menus. No luck. Good points: There are some(!) notably the speed of the EPG and selecting the red button (top right of Freeview screens) is instant. I like the fact that when a channel is selected you get a brief description about the programme and it is very easy to record. You can pause TV, rewind (if you have the option on to start with). All in all quite good. Bad points: Firmware updates. Play TV tells you that there is an update - but finding it is not intuitive enough (why can't it be automatic like normal PS3 updates). To find it select > settings > about (it's in there near the bottom). My first recording (Charlie and Lola) did not work. There was a time overlap apparently (error recording). This is something Sky does well and compensates earlier time starts, or if a programme goes on longer. There is a way round it (a pain) and with Play TV on you have to edit start and end times (which kind of defeats the object in the first place and uses valuable disc space). Recordings take up a lot of space so if you have a lot of game saves (MGS, COD, Home) do not expect many recordings. I am using Play TV as a dedicated Freeview box. It is a real bind (in the mornings!) turning the PS3 on.. waiting for the PS3 to load up... locate Play TV... select Play TV.... Wait.... select TV when Play TV is running... all a bit of a chore (wife hates this as well). Why can't my BD remote have a big button on it that does all this for me! Last up there is no series link so if you wanted to record a week's worth of Eastenders - to do this you have to go into each day and do it manually (and adjust times just in case).
PlayTV keeps crashing November 18, 2008 Mike (Bucks, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This add-on has proven to be more trouble than it's worth. It wouldn't install at first, but then installed successfully after a complete system restore. Now it has crashed again and the PS3 freezes if you try to run the application. I suggest that you hang on to your money until Sony make this system more reliable.
Play TV crashes November 9, 2008 Neach (London) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Got this about 3 weeks ago. Was working great, could record and watch TV through my PS3. Then sometimes it would loose connectivity with my Bluetooth remote. I updated the system's firmware and that seamed to work. Now when you record a program it will record for about 10mins then it will freeze, so I can't really use this for recording now. I am waiting for the next update to see if they fix the problem. PS3 support is really not much help either.
Fantastic November 5, 2008 Mr. Sam Yarker (Cornwall, UK) product arrived and is fantastic, i bought this to replace a freeview recorder id bought from a shop and that didnt work very well. Was really easy and quick to set up, the quality of the menus and the live tv is really good and is the best freeview reciever ive had. Ok sometimes the EPG doesnt always have all the details when its first turned on, but give it a few mins and ive not had a problem. Also for all the people in reviews who wrote that if you start recording with the unit switched on or if you switch the unit on while its background recording, if you then try and turn it off again it goes back to background recording and WILL automatically turn its self off again. Which is a very handy feature. But back to the product, all the recording works fine and was easy to use. The pause and rewinding of tv works realy well and is so easy to use. and also finding the programs uve stored is really easy. so overall a fantastic device for the money. Just one negative, but not sonys fault, if you have a 40gb harddrive then you will need to upgrade ure harddrive to a bigger one, cause my games alone only left me with 5gb when i checked.
Great gadget, poor reception October 30, 2008 MKFan (UK) 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
Although this is a great gadget for the ps3 the reception is worse than my 20 digibox. Never had such poor reception as with playtv. I have since replaced this with my previous cheap digibox as you get breaks in signals every minute and impossible to watch tv. Another negative is that playtv only records programmes as per the programme guide times. It does not record according to time settings. Numerous times my programmes have overrun, playtv stops recording and therefore does not record the whole of the episode. There is no funtion to programme the playtv to overrun the recording by a couple of minutes. Not totally useless but wouldn't recommend this.
