    5 out of 5 stars Sony Playstation 3 (80GB)   December 1, 2008

Have I made a mistake..This is what I asked myself after parting with no small amount of hard earned for a "games machine". I really wanted a Blu-Ray player but my Son promised this would be all i need, yeah!. Well, i have never played a game in my life so i ask the question.

Okay, the answer is I'm blown away, this is the best all round piece of kit that i have ever purchased. The PS3 plays my existing DVD's with better results than my 500 Denon and the quality of Blu-Ray on my Panasonic flat screen is awsome. Looks great, oozes quality, and the wireless, internet, audio and video capabilities are second to none and i'm only just scratching the surface of this machines capabilities, oh and I just might start to play games. Sometimes it's worth listening to the kids.

    5 out of 5 stars PLAYSTATION 3 pawns XBOX 360   December 1, 2008

well what can say, previously owning an XBOX 360 i can safly say that the PS3 mops the floor with the 360 (and that's an understatement). SONY is so much better than microsoft by far, the PLAYSTATION 3 has better ventilation than the 360, better design than the 360, better picture quality than the 360, less noise than a 360 (the XBOX 360 sounds like a chainsaw),the PS3 dosn't eat your disks unlike the 360 (the XBOX 360 scratches your disks beyond repair), The PLAYSTATION 3 has better controllers than the XBOX 360 and last bun not least the PLAYSTATION 3 has BLU-RAY unlike the 360 so clearly the PS3 is inevitably a far superior console.
oh i forgot to mention the PLAYSTATION has free online play.

ps i owend both before i sold my 360. I will stick to PLAYSTATION 3.

4 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying - Not for small kids really   November 29, 2008

See Mr Pettejohns review - its gives a good summary of all the non-game related reasons to buy it. What it doen't have is a whole load of family friendly games - as a console it's pretty hardcore.

However, for 300 its good value for all the non-game stuff that it does. So I see the game capacity as a free add on rather than vice versa.

You can convince "the Mrs" you bought it for all its non-game features because it does stand up on its own.

Hi, I bought the ps3 a week ago, I wasnt extremely impressed.
I read that the ps3 can now play divx (having updated the ps3 to the latest firmware), BUT i later found out that it does not play all divx (xvid) files which was very disapointing.
I knew the 80gb version couldnt play ps2 games, but the 60gb version which was discontinued could... sounds like something a bit fishy, i wonder if sony are going to rip us off by charging for ps2 games on a download service in the future!?
Also, when playing a new game, you may have to install it on to the ps3. This is very time consuming, and it annoyed me. Even after installing, you still get loading times in some games... weird... i thought this was next gen?...
The menu (or aka XMB) is exactly like the psp verision, thats prbly a bad thing because i would have liked to see something abit fresh.

apart from all the above, good games will be coming to the ps3 in the long term,.. its a good long term investment, and i am fairly happy with my purchase... 7.0 / 10

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB BELND OF GAMES, DVD, HOME MEDIA AND INTERNET   November 24, 2008

Is there really now any context between the PS3 and X Box? No of course not, you pay a 120 odd more for the PS3 but you get a new evolution in home entertainment system not just a games console. It's on a different planet. Admittedly the real gamers will argue that the X box has better technical specification to deliver better gaming, but if your not fussed about analysing that and want a great games console that delivers a superb gaming experience and Blu ray Disc in one package the PS3 delivers hands down.

The PS3 is amazing, absolutely amazing - there is little if anything to fault it. Also backed up by the fact Sony are always steps ahead of Microsoft who are busy sorting out the next version of Windows.

As may others have said it's an absolute myriad of box of tricks that is far more than a games console.
Blu Ray is amazing, web link up and browsing is good, storage for games, videos's pictures etc is great and you can alsow watch BBC i player soon via your Blue ray on the TV!

The games console is superb, so all in all the PS3 can't be beaten, you won't go wrong with this, just take some time off afetr yuo get it or you'll have mega tired mornings and rushing home asap to play!
