    Amazon.co.uk Review

Although there are many games which are still popular now, years or even decades after their original release, none have remained at the very pinnacle of the genre as long as StarCraft. One of the best selling PC games ever, the original real-time strategy game came out in 1998 but it's taken until now for a sequel to be deemed necessary. This gives developer Blizzard (makers of World Of WarCraft) the unenviable task of creating a game that is both new and accessible - and yet will not upset the millions of fans of the original.

The basic set-up is still the same with three playable races: the Terrans (humans), the Giger-esque Zerg and the psychic, elf-like Protoss. There will be approximately the same number of units for each race as in the original (about a dozen each) but many are all new and those that do return have been significantly altered, from simple things like giving the Protoss Zelaot a new dash attack to replacing the Terran Goliath mech with the Viking which can now transform into a jet.

One of the most obvious changes in the game is the difference that a decade of graphical advancements has brought about, with ultra high resolution maps filled with hundreds of units. Online fans will love it but the single player experience has also been greatly enhanced with new CGI and real-time cut scenes and a complex storyline. With an extremely powerful in-built game editor as well this sequel should last at least another ten years.

1 out of 5 stars Old already   November 30, 2008

This game will be old already when it goes out.

Please correct me, but the graphics look just like the 1996 version but with higher resolution. The gameplay will be a copy of the first game one and I am afraid 90% of the units will just be a copy of those created in 1996.

And still it amazes me that Blizzard will not make it to Christmas, ... the gaming industry giant Blizzard has gone well beyond big, to the point it cannot meet deadlines or follow its schedules to release games on time: second and third parts of classic games, another company that will bring zero innovation to the gaming scene and lives up to their heritage from the 90s.

For a good RTS game go get Company of Heroes or the Warhammer 40k game pack: Starcraft 2 will underperform against them

Today, in RTS terms there is no doubt: Relic > Blizzard.

i strongly recommend anyone who does not know about this game to buy the original and expansion before buying this game, so you get a good understanding of what this next part is about, this game contains the next 3 episodes (7,8,9).

This game has some really big shows to fill after the original game's success and life of about 10 years, in computer game industry years, thats about 1000 years old!. and most games have died after 3 to 5 years.

this is a game to pre-order! its going to be worth the wait...
if you want to know how good its going to be, play the original, its 10 years old and still going strong, it was only game of the year, and had expansion pack of the year, not much to go by! ;-)
