5 out of 5 stars Pucker up for a good game   December 30, 2008
    Michael Collins (London)
Having never played a hockey game before, I decided I'd give this a go based on a couple of friend's reviews. As soon as the intro scene loads up you know it's going to be worth the investment. The controls are seamless, the commentary amusing-if cheesy-as one would expect and the graphics are mind blowing. Chuck in fast paced frenetic gameplay, wi a coupla simple brawls for good measure, and this is one of the best sports games I've played in a long while-I even had to put Fifa on the back burner to gi it a go.

5 out of 5 stars For the Football Fans?   December 13, 2008

Personally, I'm a pro-evo head who occasionaly has a punt at Fifa but due to the demos of both games being shoddy (and the demo for NHL 09 being rather impressive) I thought I would give this a shot.

Can I state that I have never seen an Ice-Hockey game in my life.
I didn't know any of the rules in great detail.
I watch and bet on football and football alone and don't partake in or watch any other sports.

My main worry was that I would buy this game and not have a clue how to play in any kind of style. Luckily this game caters for the Hockey-Simpletons such as myself.

The Be-a-Pro mode starts players off in the AHL (the lower league or 'Wee Diddy League') This means that you are in a league with players as rubbish as yourself some of the time and then, as you become better, you can progress to the top-lines of the NHL.

Football-heads worrying about the rules of Hockey need not worry because they are picked up rather quickly.

I love the pace of this game too. Play the demo of this for a while then go back to pro evo 2008. I did. And it feels like playing in slow-motion. Once you are used to the fast- and often frantic- pace of NHL 09 you will never go back.

Where this game really shines is in multi-player... And I don't mean on-line.
Get a REAL FRIEND round to your house (one that's in the same room as you). You will never have as much fun with a games console.
Playing against each other is frantic and often hilarious. It starts to take a kind of Burnout-Revenge feel as you smash each other into the boards or fights break out.
Also playing with each other keeps you entertained for hours. The style of teamwork needed to create and score goals on NHL makes for a great multi-player game.
In football, goals are often solo efforts. In hockey, 9 out of 10 are not. Having to use some crazy passing and positioning with each other to score really adds to the satisfaction of every goal.

This review was mainly written for FIFA 09 fans or Pro Evo fans who are scared to put the ball away and pick up a puck.

BUY NOW REGARDLESS OF YOUR MAIN SPORT be that Ice-Hockey, Football or Shinty.

    You wont regret it.

I haven't played any ice hockey games for a number of years, but after the so-so demos for Fifa 09 and PES2009, I decided to take the plunge. I'm so glad I did as this is brilliant.

The graphics and presentation are top notch as you would expect from an EA sports title. The excellent Be a Pro mode (available in all EA sports titles this year) is available and allows you to create your own pro or use an existing one to use for a campaign. You never feel out of place and the arrows telling you where you should be are easy to follow. You also get a lage array of league and national teams to use in all tournaments, leagues etc. You even have a choice of using the new analogue control system or the far simpler NHL 94 controls for the nostalgic amongst you.

Naturally, you will get more enjoyment out of this if you're an ice hockey fan, but if you're tired of the same old football releases each year and you regularly play with mates online or on the same console, this is a worthy game to have in your collection. At the very least, I'd recommend downloading the demo and giving it a bash. After a few beers and a few games of NHL 09, you may even forget about the beautiful game completely.

    5 out of 5 stars NHL 09 - It's Pucka!!   October 15, 2008

This is a fantastic ice hockey game! I've been a fan of the game since seeing the Maple Leafs beat Buffalo in Toronto some years ago but this is the first ice hockey game I've played and I was very impressed - it really captures the essence of this excitingly fast sport! EA have really polished this game the graphics are exellent the players look great and move realistically just watch the nice little touches such as the spray of ice as players put the brakes on! The gameplay is top notch and the whole game night feeling comes across very strongly when the music plays and the teams come out onto the ice under the spotlights! I must admit I was worried that the controls may be difficult to pick up but it's not at all after a few games! I also love the unpredictability of the results for example you can thrash NY Rangers 6-1 one game and the next you can lose to Ottawa Senators 2-0 but winning every game by a big margin and having it all your own way would be boring! The sound effects are exellent such as the thud from the hits, the ping off the goal pipes, the scrape of the skates on the ice and the twang of the puck as it hits the glass! The only thing I am not that keen on is the fighting which although part of the game it somehow just does'nt feel right - maybe I will get used to it in time! Overall this is a very addictive game that has a top quality feel about it with lots of different modes to try with all the licenses to top it all off! I recommend this game to NHL fans and anyone who wants to "feel" what this great sport is like! GO NHL 09!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best sport game i've played in a while....   September 27, 2008

I bought this game yesterday as i am a huge NHL fan. I downloaded the demo from the playstation website and wasn't very impressed but hoped the real thing would be better. And i was very happy indeed. The game has been made much more realisitc and harder. the controls take a while to get used to and are hard to master but once you get the hang of it you can't put your controller down. The 'Be A Pro' game mode is such an awesome idea; incase you havn't heard you make your own character and play just as him, not as the whole team. Awesome game. If you have downloaded the demo don't let it put you off, the real game is 100 times better!!
